Character markings: The range of character marks in spalted maple is highly variable. It will contain a balanced spalt lining, random tap holes, tight knots, fine cracks, bark inclusions, discoloration from maple sugaring hardware, impact from insects, and many other characteristics imparted by its long life in the natural world. The spalting pattern in every batch of veneer we process is like a fingerprint, no two are the same. This veneer is from the wood that was previously infected with fungi which gives it that unique discolouration and wonderful contrast making it one of the more characteristic woods available.
